As a Mother and Wife

Abigail writes a letter to Mr. Adams who is now building an Empire as a delegate to the first continental congress. While I was reading Man is a Dangerous Creature, though I lack much of specific background of the U.S in terms of history, I could measure that how hard time was, especially for a woman who had to leave her husband.

For Abigail, my first impression by the letter M.I.D.C (for Man is a Dangerous Creature) is that she must be a woman refined, patient and independent in 1970s who had a philosophy for government affairs. She sounds like a polemic agency, because she shows her ideology which is very strong and powerful toward the upcoming era. The meaning of the title, M.I.D.C is explained by her. In the middle of the letter that human always had abused the sacred power against citizens. Especially by a person who is most strenuous for the rights of the people that is politicians and aristocrats, past, in and out of the U.S. It seems that she had paid attention to history affairs which are related to the corruption of governments and organizations for citizens. As a wife of a revolution leader, delegate of first congress and the future president of the U.S, she expresses her regret and fear for future of the U.S about liberty and peace. (Adams 316)

But her emotion, in the letter, looks more complicated beyond her fear and regret, which we can guess out of her highly educated tone and instructive content. The reason is that she is a mother of a family. What if her son cries aloud for absence of father? What if he cries in the night? Some of Adam’s friends seem to live together in Adams’ house but there must be a role which can’t be replaced by others. Moreover, she knows her status that is sacrifice. Without husband, she has to count the letters from her husband and ask her husband’s condition in one way that is letter. In cold season, when village was prevailed by disease and flooded by heavy rain, she wrote her letter to Mr. Adams.

Though M.I.D.C is a single letter, it clearly expresses Abigail’s emotional condition as a mother and wife in hard times and this hints to us her social class and insights.
